Earth Keeping

Earth Day - Earth

We missed Earth Hour here in the EC - did you know about Earth Hour?

Earth Hour is the lights out campaign launched in 2007 in Australia, the results being that for 60 minutes much of the world went dark and the demand for electricity dropped significantly. This year Earth Hour took place on

Saturday, March 28, 8:30 p.m. and again, it was an international demonstration of organizations, businesses and populations around the world of the power of individuals to create change, not about solving climate change, but about people expressing concern and doing something about it.

To quote The Salvation Army's Lt. Colonel Lynda Watt "It is timely that the intentions of our position statement be put into practice as we become involved in 'earth-keeping', which for us is a moral and theological imperative.  In supporting Earth Hour, officers and employees create an awareness of environmental issues, and as Territorial Headquarters again turns their lights off  we model for the territory a simple way in which we can make a difference.  Too bad we missed it here in Winnipeg....yet, all is not lost for this year as Earth DAY  is yet to come - it is April 22, 2009.  Earth Day Canada is a national environmental communications organization mandated to improve the state of the environment by empowering Canadians to achieve local solutions.  It is the largest most celebrated, environmental event worldwide.  For more information on ways to participate click here.

Lot of good initiatives that are taking place in the schools. I think the generations coming up now will have more of a concern for the environment than some of us probably did. Hope that all the efforts translate into something concrete and lasting.
